AWWDA raises the bar on quality and service delivery

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) has taken another step towards improving institutional performance and service delivery after undergoing the Stage Two audit for ISO 9001:2015 certification in Nairobi.
The assessment, conducted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) at Athi Water Plaza on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, focused on how effectively AWWDA has implemented its Quality Management System (QMS) across its operations.
The Stage Two audit is a significant phase in the Agency’s pursuit of ISO 9001:2015 certification, as it moves beyond documented procedures to examine whether established quality systems are being put into practice and producing the expected results.
During the exercise, KEBS auditors engaged staff from different departments to assess the effectiveness and consistency of key operational processes. The review covered areas including workplace preparedness, management of documents and records, process controls, compliance with applicable requirements and the Agency’s capacity to meet the needs and expectations of its stakeholders.
The audit is expected to provide AWWDA with an opportunity to evaluate the strength of its existing systems while identifying areas that require further improvement. Any gaps identified during the assessment will help the Agency strengthen internal controls, improve operational efficiency and promote greater consistency in the execution of its mandate.
AWWDA’s implementation of the QMS is also expected to enhance accountability by ensuring that institutional processes are standardised and supported by clear procedures and evidence. The system provides a framework for making informed decisions, managing operational risks and monitoring performance while encouraging continuous improvement.
The quality management approach comes at a time when effective institutional systems are increasingly important in the delivery of sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure. For AWWDA, strengthening internal processes is closely linked to its responsibility of supporting reliable water and sanitation services in its area of jurisdiction, including Nairobi, Kiambu and Murang’a counties.
The findings and recommendations from the Stage Two audit will provide valuable guidance as the Agency works to further improve its systems and address any areas requiring attention. The process is therefore not only focused on certification but also on embedding quality management into the Agency’s day-to-day operations.
AWWDA views the audit as an opportunity to reinforce a culture of quality, accountability and integrity across its workforce. By maintaining effective systems and regularly reviewing its processes, the Agency aims to improve organizational performance and ensure that its operations remain responsive to stakeholder needs.
The Agency remains committed to continuous improvement as it pursues its mandate of developing and managing sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure. Through stronger institutional systems, AWWDA seeks to enhance service delivery and contribute to improved livelihoods and socio-economic development within the communities it serves.
