The Nairobi Rivers Commission has activated a key flood-control structure at Nairobi dam as authorities intensify preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains, which could increase pressure on drainage systems and waterways across the capital.

Water is now flowing through the dam’s emergency spillway, an intervention intended to provide an outlet for excess water and help control reservoir levels during periods of intense rainfall. The measure forms part of ongoing efforts to minimise the risk of flooding and protect communities located downstream.

The development has prompted renewed warnings for residents living in areas that could be affected by increased water flows. Communities around Nyayo Highrise, Dam Estate, parts of Kibera, Nairobi West and Madaraka have been advised to exercise caution and avoid approaching river channels and flowing water.

Other neighbourhoods that may experience flooding depending on the amount and intensity of rainfall include South C, South B, Mukuru and sections of the Industrial Area. Areas around Strathmore University and T-Mall have also been identified as locations requiring vigilance as water moves through the drainage network.

The commission has emphasised that opening the spillway is a flood-management measure rather than a guarantee against flooding. Residents have therefore been urged to remain alert, particularly during heavy downpours, when water levels can rise rapidly and conditions along river channels may become dangerous.

The intervention comes amid broader efforts to strengthen Nairobi’s preparedness for extreme weather. Flooding remains a concern in the city, where intense rainfall can overwhelm drainage infrastructure, cause rivers to swell and expose settlements near waterways to potential damage.

Construction works and flood-mitigation repairs at Nairobi Dam began on October 13, bringing together the Nairobi Rivers Commission, Nairobi City County Government and other agencies in a coordinated response.

The multi-agency initiative seeks to improve the management of water around the dam and reduce risks associated with rising reservoir levels. The emergency spillway is expected to support the controlled movement of excess water, helping authorities manage the effects of increased inflows during the rainy period.

However, the effectiveness of the intervention will also depend on rainfall intensity, the volume of water entering the dam and conditions along downstream drainage channels.

Residents have been encouraged to follow official safety advisories and avoid crossing flooded sections of roads or streams. Authorities are also expected to continue monitoring conditions as preparations for the anticipated rains progress.

The opening of the spillway marks an important step in the city’s flood preparedness, while continued public vigilance remains necessary to reduce exposure to water-related hazards.
