CWWDA extends water supply to Kitivo primary school

Kitivo Primary School in Mwatate Sub-County, Taita Taveta County, has received an improved water supply system following the completion of a project implemented by the Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA).
The project involved extending a water pipeline by three kilometres, installing a 10,000-litre storage tank and constructing a dedicated water point to improve access to water within the school.
The new infrastructure is expected to strengthen water availability for pupils and teachers while reducing the challenges associated with accessing reliable supplies for daily school activities.
The development is expected to support a better learning environment by improving access to water for drinking, handwashing, cleaning and sanitation. Reliable water supplies are particularly important in learning institutions, where shortages can affect hygiene standards and disrupt normal school activities.
The project comes amid wider efforts to address water shortages in Taita Taveta, where several communities continue to face challenges accessing reliable water supplies.
In November 2025, the national government, through CWWDA, commissioned two borehole projects at Mwarondo in Sechu and Mwazambo in Nyolo, Mwatate Sub-County, targeting more than 15,000 residents.
The two boreholes were developed to address persistent shortages that had forced residents to travel long distances in search of water.
Other developments in the county also demonstrate the growing focus on improving water access in schools and communities.
In July 2026, the County Government of Taita Taveta, working with World Vision, commissioned the KSh21 million Riata Kubwa Water Project. The initiative was designed to benefit more than 500 learners and over 1,000 households through a six-kilometre pipeline, a 100,000-litre storage tank and four community water points.
The Coast Water Works Development Agency is responsible for developing and maintaining water and sanitation infrastructure across six coastal counties, including Taita Taveta. Its mandate covers the development of water and sanitation infrastructure to improve access to services across the region.
The agency’s wider infrastructure development programme is also supported by the national Water and Sanitation Development Project, which involves several coastal counties, including Taita Taveta.
The completion of the Kitivo Primary School project adds to these interventions, highlighting the importance of extending water infrastructure to public institutions and underserved communities as Kenya works towards improving access to safe and reliable water.
