Turkana County is strengthening collaboration with water-sector partners to improve the delivery and sustainability of water infrastructure as efforts to address water scarcity and enhance community resilience continue.

Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai hosted the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) Board of Trustees for discussions on the implementation and long-term sustainability of water infrastructure being developed under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP).

The engagement focused on strengthening project oversight, ensuring quality standards and identifying implementation challenges at an early stage. The discussions also highlighted the need to ensure that completed water facilities remain operational and continue responding to the needs of communities they are intended to serve.

Governor Lomorukai, together with County Executive Committee Member for Water Services James Long’ole, reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to working closely with WSTF and project implementation teams to ensure investments deliver sustainable benefits.

The county leadership emphasised the importance of coordination among institutions involved in the development and management of water infrastructure, particularly in a region where communities face persistent challenges linked to water availability.

Leading the WSTF delegation, Board of Trustees Chairman Lucas Chepkitony stressed the need for water investments to reflect local priorities and address the specific needs of communities. He underscored the importance of ensuring that infrastructure investments translate into lasting services rather than merely the completion of construction works.

The discussions come as HoAGW4RP continues to support groundwater investments aimed at improving access to dependable water sources in Turkana. The project forms part of wider efforts to strengthen water security and build resilience among communities facing water scarcity and climate-related pressures.

Groundwater development is particularly important in areas where surface water sources are limited or unreliable. Sustainable management of such investments therefore requires continued collaboration between county authorities, national institutions, development partners and local communities.

The engagement between Turkana County and WSTF is expected to strengthen coordination around project implementation, monitoring and sustainability while helping address emerging challenges before they affect service delivery.

Through continued cooperation, the county and its partners seek to ensure that investments under HoAGW4RP provide reliable and sustainable water services while supporting the resilience and livelihoods of communities across Turkana.
