Ministry engages communities over Thwake dam project concerns

The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing concerns raised by communities affected by the Thwake Multipurpose Dam Project following a public participation meeting held at Mavindini Market in Kathonzweni Sub-County, Makueni County.
The meeting followed an inspection of the dam project and provided an opportunity for residents living in and around the project area to raise issues and present grievances related to its implementation.
During the engagement, community members were given a platform to share their concerns directly with the Ministry, allowing officials to listen to the challenges experienced by residents and discuss possible ways of resolving them.
The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen engagement between the government and communities affected by major water infrastructure projects. Public participation provides an important avenue for residents to communicate their experiences, seek clarification on project-related matters and contribute to discussions on issues affecting their livelihoods.
The Ministry emphasised the importance of working closely with the affected communities and relevant stakeholders to identify practical solutions to the concerns raised. It also reiterated its commitment to pursuing amicable and lasting resolutions through continued dialogue and cooperation.
The engagement underscored the need to ensure that the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects takes into account the concerns and interests of the people living within the surrounding areas.
The Thwake Multipurpose Dam Project is a major water infrastructure undertaking intended to support water supply and other development needs. As the project progresses, consultations with local communities remain important in addressing grievances and maintaining constructive relationships between project implementers and residents.
Through such engagements, the government seeks to create opportunities for communities to participate in discussions concerning projects that affect them while strengthening communication between public institutions and local stakeholders.
The meeting at Mavindini Market reaffirmed the Ministry’s intention to continue engaging affected residents and relevant parties in seeking solutions to outstanding concerns.
Sustained dialogue and collaboration will remain important in addressing community grievances, promoting mutual understanding and supporting the implementation of the Thwake Multipurpose Dam Project.
