Nairobi, Kisumu residents to face water disruptions over repair works

Residents in parts of Nairobi and Kisumu have been advised to prepare for temporary water shortages as water companies in the two cities undertake repair and infrastructure improvement works.
In Nairobi, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced on Thursday, September 10, that it would shut down the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant to allow emergency repairs on the Sasumua-Kabete pipeline.
According to the company, the shutdown will begin at 6am on Friday, September 11, and is expected to continue until 8am on Saturday, September 12. The works will result in approximately 26 hours of interrupted water supply in several parts of the capital.
Areas that are expected to be affected include Westlands, Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Hurlingham, Upper Hill, Dagoretti, Kawangware and Waithaka, as well as the University of Nairobi and parts of Valley Road.
In Westlands and Lavington, the disruption will affect areas around Riverside Drive, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Ndume Road, King’ara Road and Riara Road.
Residents of Kileleshwa will also experience interruptions along Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mbooni Road, Othaya Road, Kaputei, Laikipia Road, Githunguri, the Department of Defence area, St George’s School and Tembere Road.
The University of Nairobi main campus, customers along the Mamlaka line and parts of Valley Road are also listed among the affected areas.
Other affected locations include parts of Kilimani and Hurlingham, such as Argwings Kodhek Road, Hurlingham Shopping Centre, Mtito Andei Road, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Lower George Padmore Road, Daystar University, Denis Pritt Road and Coptic Hospital.
In Upper Hill, the affected areas include Matumbato, Kiambere and Masaba, Mawenzi Road, parts of Hospital Road, Kenya Road, Elgon Road, Kenyatta National Hospital and KEMRI Flats along Mbagathi Way.
Meanwhile, residents in parts of Kisumu are also set to experience a temporary water interruption on Friday, September 11.
The Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) said the disruption will facilitate construction of meter chambers and trial pits, alongside the installation of valves and meters aimed at improving the efficiency and performance of the city’s water supply system.
Milimani, Nyamasaria, Nyalenda A and B, the Central Business District and Dunga Estate are among the areas expected to be affected.
KIWASCO said the planned works are necessary to improve the water distribution system and enhance service delivery to residents. Residents in both Nairobi and Kisumu have been urged to store enough water ahead of the scheduled works and make alternative arrangements to minimise inconvenience during the interruptions
