Eldoret’s rapid urban growth is increasing pressure on existing water supplies, prompting investment in new infrastructure to expand production and ensure the growing city has adequate and reliable water services.

The ongoing Kipkaren Water Supply Project in Kapseret Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, is among the major projects being implemented to address the rising demand. Once completed, the project is expected to inject an additional 24,000 cubic metres of treated water into the supply system every day.

Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir said the additional water will strengthen supply to Eldoret while also extending services to communities in neighbouring Nandi County.

Korir spoke during an inspection of the project, which includes construction of a 100,000-cubic-metre main water storage tank. The project is being implemented under the North Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency.

Of the 24,000 cubic metres of treated water expected to be produced daily, 21,000 cubic metres will be allocated to Eldoret, while 3,000 cubic metres will be supplied to Mosoriot in Nandi County.

“The project in total will deliver 24,000 cubic metres per day, of which 3,000 will be given to Mosoriot to serve the people of Mosoriot in Nandi, and then the balance of 21,000 cubic metres will be serving Eldoret,” Korir said.

The additional supply is expected to help the city respond to increasing water requirements driven by population growth, expanding residential settlements, commercial activities and development of new urban areas.

As Eldoret continues to expand, demand for water is expected to rise across households, businesses, institutions and other users. The development of additional production and storage capacity is therefore considered important in ensuring that growth is matched by adequate water infrastructure.

Upon completion, the Kipkaren project will feed treated water into the existing distributio

Counties
