Counties gear up for next K-WASH phase

Four counties are strengthening their preparedness for the next phase of the Kenya Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (K-WASH) Programme as national and county teams step up efforts to address implementation gaps and accelerate delivery of water and sanitation services.
The K-WASH Programme Management Unit (PMU) held a Cluster 4 workshop in Eldoret on October 8, 2026, bringing together teams from Baringo, Nandi, West Pokot and Samburu counties to review implementation progress and agree on practical measures to improve programme performance.
The engagement brought together County Coordinators, County Programme Implementation Unit (CPIU) members and technical officers involved in the delivery of K-WASH activities. Discussions focused on the preparedness of counties to implement water and sanitation interventions and meet key programme targets.
Participants reviewed progress made by individual counties while assessing their readiness for the Cycle 3 Disbursement Linked Indicator (DLI) verification process. The teams examined projected DLI achievements and identified areas requiring additional attention to ensure counties are adequately prepared for verification.
Contract management also featured prominently during the discussions, with participants examining implementation challenges that could affect the timely delivery of planned activities. Technical support requirements were identified to help county teams address bottlenecks and maintain momentum as the programme advances.
The workshop also addressed environmental and social safeguards, including land acquisition and way-leave matters that can affect the implementation of water and sanitation infrastructure. Grievance redress mechanisms were discussed as part of efforts to ensure that concerns arising during project implementation are identified and resolved appropriately.
Occupational health and safety was another area of focus, with county teams highlighting the importance of maintaining safe working environments throughout the implementation of K-WASH activities.
Following the discussions, the participating counties developed specific action plans aimed at closing identified gaps and strengthening their readiness for the Cycle 3 verification exercise. The plans are expected to provide a clear roadmap for addressing outstanding issues and improving implementation at county level.
The Cluster 4 engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the K-WASH programme to strengthen coordination between national and county governments and ensure that programme activities translate into tangible improvements in water and sanitation services.
By bringing together technical teams from different levels of government, the programme is also seeking to strengthen institutional capacity, improve implementation systems and promote greater accountability for results.
The continued engagements come as K-WASH advances its broader objective of improving access to sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services while strengthening the institutions responsible for delivering these essential services.
The workshop underscored the importance of early preparation, coordinated implementation and timely resolution of challenges in ensuring that planned investments deliver lasting benefits to communities across the participating counties.
