Baricha joins KEWI governing council

The Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) has welcomed Hassan Ahamednur Baricha as a new member of its Governing Council following his appointment to serve a three-year term.
Baricha officially took up his new role on September 4, 2026, following an appointment by Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Hon. Eric Muriithi Mugaa.
His appointment was made pursuant to Section 5(1)(g)(iii) of the Kenya Water Institute Act (Cap. 372A) and published through Gazette Notice No. 14171.
The new Council member brings extensive experience in human resources management, with expertise in areas including human capital development, performance management, organisational effectiveness and productivity.
His professional background is expected to strengthen the Governing Council’s capacity to provide strategic leadership and oversight as the institute continues to advance its mandate of developing skilled human capital for Kenya’s water sector.
Baricha’s appointment comes at a time when the water sector continues to require a highly skilled and professional workforce capable of responding to emerging challenges in water and sanitation management.
Through his experience in human resource development and organisational performance, Baricha is expected to contribute to strengthening institutional systems and promoting a culture of accountability, professionalism and continuous improvement at KEWI.
His role on the Governing Council will include contributing to strategic discussions and decisions aimed at supporting the institute’s institutional growth and effectiveness.
KEWI plays an important role in supporting the water sector by developing and strengthening the skills and technical capacity of personnel working in the industry. The institute’s work contributes to ensuring that the country has a competent workforce capable of supporting the delivery of sustainable water and sanitation services.
The institute expressed confidence that Baricha’s expertise would add value to the Council’s strategic oversight and support KEWI’s efforts to enhance institutional excellence.
His appointment is also expected to complement the expertise of other members of the Governing Council as they work towards strengthening the institute’s programmes and fulfilling its statutory mandate.
Welcoming Baricha to the institute, KEWI said his contribution would be valuable in advancing its commitment to professionalism, accountability, organisational effectiveness and the continuous development of human capital.
Baricha’s three-year tenure will therefore provide an opportunity for him to contribute his knowledge and experience to the institute’s strategic direction and efforts to strengthen Kenya’s water sector workforce.
His arrival marks another step in KEWI’s efforts to enhance its leadership and governance structures while maintaining its focus on producing a skilled and professional workforce for the country’s water and sanitation sector.
