The Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) has stepped up environmental and social monitoring of groundwater infrastructure projects in Turkana County as part of efforts to ensure that investments under the Horn of Africa Ground Water for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP) are implemented safely and sustainably.

A WSTF team is currently visiting selected project sites in the county to assess compliance with environmental and social safeguards and review the progress of ongoing groundwater infrastructure activities.

The monitoring exercise, taking place in Turkana, is focused on ensuring that project implementation meets approved environmental and social requirements while addressing potential risks that could affect communities, workers and the surrounding environment.

During the site visits, the team is assessing several areas, including environmental protection, occupational health and safety, community safety and compliance with established safeguards.

The exercise is also providing an opportunity for WSTF officials to engage directly with project implementation teams and communities in areas hosting the groundwater investments. Such engagements are expected to help identify emerging concerns early and support timely action where improvements may be required.

The monitoring team will also provide recommendations aimed at strengthening compliance and improving the implementation of the project. The recommendations will help guide project teams in addressing identified gaps and ensuring that environmental and social considerations remain part of project implementation.

The exercise comes as groundwater development continues to play an important role in strengthening water security in arid and semi-arid areas such as Turkana, where communities face significant challenges in accessing reliable water sources.

Beyond checking compliance, environmental and social monitoring helps ensure that infrastructure investments deliver benefits without creating avoidable risks for communities or the environment. It also supports accountability by providing an opportunity to assess whether agreed safeguards and implementation requirements are being followed.

The HoAGW4RP interventions in Turkana are intended to contribute to improved groundwater resilience and strengthen communities’ ability to cope with water-related challenges. Ensuring that these investments are implemented responsibly is therefore an important component of achieving their long-term objectives.

The WSTF monitoring exercise further highlights the importance of involving local communities in development projects. Engagement with residents can help project teams understand local concerns, strengthen social inclusion and promote greater ownership of investments.

The ongoing site visits form part of WSTF’s broader efforts to ensure that projects supported through the Fund comply with environmental and social standards while delivering sustainable benefits.

As the monitoring exercise continues, findings from the selected sites are expected to inform recommendations and actions aimed at improving project implementation and strengthening environmental and social safeguards.

The exercise ultimately seeks to ensure that groundwater investments in Turkana contribute to lasting water security while protecting communities, workers and the environment.
