Kenya is preparing for potentially heavy rainfall during the October-December (OND) 2026 season, with forecasts indicating that more than 80 per cent of the country could receive above-average rainfall.

The expected increase in rainfall is likely to raise river flows and heighten the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and locations near rivers, seasonal streams and other waterways. Authorities are therefore urging communities to take precautionary measures early rather than wait until flooding begins.

The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has called on members of the public to remain vigilant and prepare for the possible effects of increased rainfall. The advisory encourages households and communities to take practical steps to reduce the risk of flooding and protect lives and property.

Residents are being urged to clear drainage channels around their homes and communities to allow rainwater to flow freely. Blocked or poorly maintained drainage systems can increase the likelihood of water accumulating in residential areas, roads and other public spaces during periods of intense rainfall.

People living near rivers and seasonal streams have also been advised to exercise caution and avoid crossing or staying close to waterways when water levels begin to rise. The authority is particularly encouraging residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert to changes in river conditions and respond promptly to official warnings.

Property owners are similarly encouraged to take preventive measures to safeguard homes, businesses and other valuable assets from potential flood damage. Early preparation can help reduce losses and make it easier for families and communities to respond when heavy rains occur.

The WRA has also urged the public to rely on official hydrological information and flood early-warning advisories when making decisions during the rainy season. Timely access to accurate information can help communities identify emerging risks and take appropriate action before conditions deteriorate.

The anticipated rains could provide important water resources for the country, but excessive rainfall can also create serious risks where drainage systems are inadequate or settlements are located in flood-prone areas. Preparedness will therefore remain important throughout the season.

The authority is encouraging Kenyans to stay informed, monitor hydrological updates and follow guidance issued by relevant government agencies.

The message from authorities is clear: early preparation, awareness and timely response can help communities reduce the impacts of flooding and keep people safe during the OND 2026 rainfall season
