KWASH assesses programme progress ahead of review

The sixth Implementation Support Mission for the Kenya Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Program (KWASH) is underway in Nairobi as the programme management team, World Bank and other stakeholders assess implementation progress and prepare for the programme’s upcoming Mid-Term Review.
The mission brings together key partners to examine achievements, identify implementation challenges and agree on measures to strengthen delivery during the next phase of the programme.
The meeting opened with remarks from KWASH Coordinator Eng. Winfred Amwata and World Bank Task Team Leader Ms. Pascaline Ndungu, who set the stage for discussions on programme performance, results and implementation priorities.
Participants began the mission by reviewing progress against actions agreed during the previous implementation support mission. The discussions also examined the performance of the two main components of the programme—the Program-for-Results (PforR) and Investment Project Financing (IPF)—with stakeholders assessing progress against established targets.
Financial and operational issues featured prominently during the discussions. Stakeholders reviewed the status of IPF procurement, budget allocations, disbursements and financial reporting. They also considered the roadmap for verification of Year Two and Year Three results by the Independent Verification Agent (IVA).
The meeting further examined changes arising from the restructuring of both the PforR and IPF components. Stakeholders discussed how the adjustments could be implemented effectively while maintaining focus on the programme’s intended results.
A key priority of the mission is to identify practical measures that can accelerate implementation and improve the achievement of programme targets. Participants also explored ways of strengthening coordination and increasing disbursements ahead of the Mid-Term Review.
During the afternoon session, discussions shifted to the restructuring of the PforR Result Areas, with particular attention given to Result Area One, which focuses on upstream readiness.
Participants examined the importance of improving preparedness, closing existing implementation gaps and ensuring that the revised results framework provides a clear pathway towards achieving KWASH objectives.
The discussions are expected to contribute to stronger programme coordination and accountability as stakeholders work to improve implementation and results.
The sixth support mission comes at an important stage in the KWASH programme as partners assess progress and make adjustments to ensure that investments translate into improved water, sanitation and hygiene outcomes.
Through continued collaboration between the Government of Kenya, the World Bank and other stakeholders, KWASH aims to strengthen implementation and support sustainable and inclusive access to water, sanitation and hygiene services across the country.
