Naivasha breaks ground on Waste-to-value sanitation plant

Naivasha has taken a major step towards improving sanitation services and promoting environmental sustainability following the groundbreaking of the Naivasha Treatment Plant Expansion (NTPx).
The ceremony marked the official start of construction of the expanded sanitation facility, which is expected to transform the way faecal sludge is managed in the growing town while creating opportunities for waste to be converted into useful products.
The event brought together representatives from the National Government, Nakuru County Government, Naivasha Water and Sewerage Company (NAIVAWASCO), Sanivation, development and investment partners, water service providers, Naivasha Municipality, ward leadership and members of the local community.
The broad participation highlighted the collaborative approach being taken to address sanitation challenges and promote sustainable management of waste in Naivasha.
Once completed, the NTPx facility is expected to substantially increase the town’s capacity to treat faecal sludge. The project will also introduce a waste-to-value approach, enabling treated waste to be converted into affordable fuel while creating opportunities for green economic activities.
The initiative is expected to contribute to improved sanitation and environmental protection by supporting safer and more efficient management of human waste. It also aligns with efforts to promote a circular economy in which waste materials are processed and reused rather than simply discarded.
NAIVAWASCO said the project demonstrates the importance of partnerships in developing sustainable sanitation solutions for communities. The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with government agencies, development partners, private-sector actors and residents to improve sanitation services in Naivasha.
The expansion comes as the town continues to require reliable sanitation infrastructure capable of responding to population growth and increasing demand for essential services.
Stakeholders involved in the project are expected to work together throughout the construction and implementation phases to ensure that the facility delivers its intended environmental, social and economic benefits.
The project is therefore being positioned not only as an infrastructure investment but also as an opportunity to demonstrate how innovation can support sustainable sanitation while creating economic value from waste.
With construction now officially underway, stakeholders expressed optimism that the NTPx will help build a cleaner and healthier future for Naivasha.
The project’s waste-to-value model is expected to strengthen sanitation management while contributing to environmental conservation and the development of green economic opportunities.
The groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new phase in Naivasha’s sanitation journey, with stakeholders seeking to combine innovation, partnerships and sustainable waste management to improve services for the community.
