K-WASH mission drives Kericho water projects

The Kenya Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (K-WASH) implementation in Kericho County has come under review following a visit by the K-WASH Project Management Unit (PMU) and the World Bank team to assess progress and strengthen collaboration with the county government.
The team paid a courtesy call to the County Government of Kericho on September 22, 2026, where discussions focused on the county’s progress in implementing projects under the programme, current priorities and areas requiring continued coordination among the various stakeholders.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the K-WASH team and county officials to examine the progress being made in expanding water and sanitation services across the county. Discussions also focused on implementation priorities and the need to maintain close collaboration to ensure that planned investments continue to move forward effectively.
As part of the mission, the team visited selected water and sanitation projects being implemented by the county under K-WASH. The projects include investments targeting institutions such as schools and health facilities, where reliable access to safe water and sanitation services is essential for effective service delivery.
The field visits allowed the team to gain a better understanding of the progress of the projects on the ground while also identifying challenges that may affect implementation. Such engagements provide an opportunity for stakeholders to address emerging issues and improve coordination throughout the project cycle.
The mission also brought attention to the importance of cooperation between national and county governments, development partners and other actors in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector. Effective coordination remains critical in ensuring that investments are aligned with local needs and contribute to sustainable improvements in service delivery.
K-WASH is being implemented across 19 counties in Kenya and is designed to expand sustainable access to improved water and sanitation services. Beyond infrastructure development, the programme also seeks to strengthen the systems and institutions responsible for delivering and managing water and sanitation services.
The Kericho engagement therefore forms part of broader efforts to monitor implementation, strengthen institutional collaboration and ensure that investments under the programme deliver meaningful benefits to communities.
By combining high-level discussions with field visits, the support mission provided an opportunity to link programme planning with the realities facing project implementation teams and communities. It also created a platform for stakeholders to identify areas where additional support and coordination may be required as the programme progresses.
The continued engagement between the K-WASH PMU, World Bank, county government and other sector stakeholders is expected to support effective implementation of projects while contributing to Kenya’s broader efforts to improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene services.
The Kericho visit underscores the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing WASH infrastructure and strengthening the institutions responsible for providing essential services to communities across the country.
