Water and sanitation employees are strengthening their skills in operational efficiency and service delivery through Kaizen Approach training, as efforts continue to build a workforce capable of responding effectively to the changing needs of customers and communities.

The completion of Cohort 3 marks another step in a five-cohort training programme designed to equip water and sanitation employees with practical skills for identifying inefficiencies and improving workplace processes.

The training focuses on helping employees examine their day-to-day operations, identify areas that require improvement and introduce practical solutions. In the water and sanitation sector, such skills can support utilities in improving efficiency, reducing operational challenges and strengthening the quality of services provided to customers.

Through the Kaizen Approach, employees are encouraged to embrace continuous improvement rather than relying only on major organisational changes. Small and consistent improvements in areas such as service operations, maintenance, customer support and resource management can contribute to stronger performance across water and sanitation institutions.

The programme also seeks to encourage employees to take greater responsibility for identifying challenges within their respective departments and developing solutions. This approach promotes teamwork and creates opportunities for staff at different levels to contribute to improvements in service delivery.

For water and sanitation providers, improving operational efficiency is particularly important as utilities work to meet growing demand while managing limited resources and infrastructure challenges. Developing the capacity of employees can therefore help institutions improve their internal processes and respond more effectively to the needs of consumers.

The training is also expected to contribute to a stronger customer-focused culture. By identifying inefficiencies and improving processes, water and sanitation employees can help create more reliable and responsive services for households and other consumers.

The capacity-building programme is receiving continued support from the Urban Water Catalyst Initiative (UWCI) and VEI, which are contributing to efforts to strengthen skills and promote continuous improvement within the water sector.

With three cohorts now completed, the programme is expanding the number of water and sanitation employees equipped with Kaizen principles and practical improvement techniques. Two cohorts remain before the five-cohort rollout is completed.

The initiative highlights the importance of investing in human resources alongside infrastructure and technology. A skilled and motivated workforce remains essential to ensuring that water and sanitation providers can operate efficiently and deliver sustainable services.

As the remaining cohorts undertake the training, the programme is expected to further strengthen the culture of continuous improvement among water and sanitation employees and support efforts to enhance operational performance and customer service.
