The Nyeri Water and Sewerage Company (NYEWASCO) management team has inspected ongoing sewerage infrastructure works and treatment operations as part of efforts to strengthen sanitation services and improve sewerage access for communities in Nyeri.

The management team, led by Managing Director Eng. Peter G. Kahuthu, visited the ongoing works at the Thunguma Sewer Pumping Station before proceeding to the Kangemi Sewer Treatment Plant. The inspections provided an opportunity for the company’s leadership to assess progress on infrastructure development and review the performance of existing sanitation facilities.

At Thunguma, the team examined construction activities at the sewer pumping station, which is being developed under the Kiamwathi, Ngangarithi, Ruring’u, Skuta, Misha and Thunguma sewer extension project implemented through the AOD project.

The sewer extension project is expected to expand access to sewerage services in several growing residential areas. It targets connecting more than 2,000 households to improved sewerage infrastructure, supporting efforts to enhance sanitation and reduce challenges associated with inadequate wastewater management.

The inspection enabled the management to obtain a firsthand assessment of the progress being made at the pumping station and consider areas that may require attention as construction advances. The facility is expected to play an important role in supporting the movement of wastewater within the expanded sewer network once the project is completed.

The NYEWASCO team also visited the Kangemi Sewer Treatment Plant, where management reviewed ongoing operations and assessed the facility’s operational efficiency. Discussions during the visit focused on the plant’s performance and possible measures to strengthen its operations as demand for sewerage services continues to increase.

The review of the treatment plant also provided an opportunity for management to identify areas requiring improvement and consider measures that can support reliable and efficient wastewater treatment. Effective operation of treatment facilities remains an important component of sanitation service delivery, particularly as urban and residential areas continue to expand.

The inspections form part of NYEWASCO’s efforts to monitor infrastructure development and ensure that investments in sewerage systems translate into improved services for residents. Regular field assessments also enable management to identify challenges early and make informed decisions on the next stages of project implementation and facility operations.

With the demand for sanitation services growing alongside Nyeri’s expanding communities, the development and maintenance of reliable sewerage infrastructure remains important in protecting public health and the environment.

The Thunguma Sewer Pumping Station and the wider sewer extension project are expected to contribute to the expansion of sewerage coverage, while continued attention to the Kangemi treatment facility will support the efficient management of wastewater.

Through the field visits, NYEWASCO management reaffirmed the importance of closely monitoring both ongoing construction projects and existing sanitation facilities. The assessments will help guide subsequent interventions aimed at strengthening sewerage infrastructure and improving sanitation services for communities across Nyeri.
