Nyeri Water and Sanitation Company (NYEWASCO) has stepped up efforts to strengthen accountability and improve service delivery by cascading its Financial Year 2026/2027 Performance Contract to heads of directorates and departments.

The exercise is aimed at ensuring that the company’s overall commitments are translated into specific responsibilities and measurable targets for different teams, creating a clearer link between institutional goals and individual departmental performance.

The process began with the signing of the company’s FY 2026/2027 Performance Contract by Board Chair CPA Gathogo Mwangi and Managing Director Eng. Peter G. Kahuthu. Board Director Esther N. Ndirangu witnessed the signing, which paved the way for the subsequent rollout of performance commitments across the organisation.

Heads of key directorates and departments then signed their respective Performance Contracts, covering Finance and Corporate Services, Technical Services, Commercial Services, Human Resource and Administration, Audit, Risk and Compliance, Supply Chain, and Legal Services.

The commitments are expected to provide each department with a defined set of responsibilities, targets and expected results for the financial year. This approach enables teams to understand their contribution to the company’s broader objectives while providing a basis for monitoring progress throughout the year.

The cascading exercise builds on the Performance Contract between NYEWASCO and the County Government of Nyeri for the 2026/2027 financial year. It forms part of the company’s wider performance management framework, which seeks to strengthen institutional accountability and ensure that planned commitments are converted into measurable outcomes.

For a water and sanitation utility, effective performance management is important in maintaining reliable services and responding to the needs of residents. Linking departmental responsibilities to organisational targets can help management identify areas requiring attention, track progress and ensure that resources are directed towards agreed priorities.

The process also establishes a stronger accountability chain within the company. Rather than keeping performance commitments at the organisational level, the targets are distributed across the different functions responsible for implementing them.

Through this approach, NYEWASCO is creating a framework through which performance can be assessed against clearly defined expectations. Departmental heads will be expected to take ownership of their respective commitments and contribute to the achievement of the company’s annual objectives.

The initiative comes as the company continues to focus on strengthening its operations and improving water and sanitation services for residents of Nyeri. Translating strategic commitments into departmental actions is expected to support more coordinated implementation across the organisation.

As the 2026/2027 financial year progresses, the signed Performance Contracts will provide a reference point for monitoring results and assessing how effectively the various departments are delivering on their commitments.

The exercise ultimately reinforces NYEWASCO’s focus on accountability, measurable performance and results-oriented management, with the broader objective of ensuring that institutional commitments contribute to tangible improvements in water and sanitation service delivery to residents.
