The Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) has opened registration for a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment targeting experienced plumbers, pipe fitters and water and wastewater operators in Nairobi County and neighbouring regions.

The initiative is aimed at workers who have acquired substantial practical skills through years of experience but lack formal qualifications or certificates to demonstrate their competencies to employers and clients.

Under the RPL programme, individuals can have skills and knowledge gained through work experience assessed and formally recognised. The process provides an opportunity for experienced workers to strengthen their professional credentials without necessarily having to follow the conventional route of starting formal training from scratch.

According to KEWI, the current assessment will cover two key competency areas: plumbing and pipefitting, as well as water and wastewater management.

The institute says the programme is particularly relevant to skilled workers seeking to improve their employability, enhance their professional standing and gain greater acceptance within the water and sanitation industry.

“Do you have a wealth of experience in your trade yet you do not have any formal certificate to show for it to your potential clients?” KEWI asked in a recent announcement, encouraging eligible workers to take advantage of the assessment.

Registration for the exercise is open until August 26, 2026, with the assessment fee set at KSh22,500.

The programme comes as demand for skilled personnel across Kenya’s water, sanitation and plumbing sectors continues to grow, with formal recognition of practical skills potentially helping experienced workers compete for employment opportunities and contracts that require recognised qualifications.

For independent plumbers and technicians, formal certification can also provide a way of demonstrating competence to customers, contractors and institutions while improving their ability to participate in larger projects.

KEWI is encouraging eligible professionals operating in Nairobi County and surrounding areas to register for the assessment. Applicants can obtain the registration form through the institute’s designated registration channel or contact its Recognition of Prior Learning coordinators for further information.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to bridge the gap between skills acquired through practical experience and formal qualifications, allowing workers to have competencies developed outside traditional education systems assessed and recognised.

For experienced plumbers, pipe fitters and water and wastewater operators, the assessment therefore offers an opportunity to turn years of practical experience into formally recognised professional credentials.
