The Uasin Gishu County Rural Water and Sanitation Company PLC (URWASCO) is seeking technical support and capacity-building opportunities to strengthen its operations and improve water and sanitation services across the county.

The company held discussions with sector stakeholders during an engagement at their headquarters, where URWASCO officials outlined several areas where technical collaboration could help improve service delivery and institutional performance.

The delegation was led by URWASCO Chairman Hon. Pius Kigen, Acting Managing Director Carolyne Ngerechi and Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for Water, Hon. Anthony Sitienei.

The discussions focused on strengthening the technical and operational capacity of the water service provider through targeted interventions in several areas. These include staff capacity building, water treatment optimisation and laboratory strengthening.

The stakeholders also identified Non-Revenue Water (NRW) management as a key area for potential cooperation. Reducing water losses can help water utilities improve operational efficiency, strengthen revenue collection and make better use of available water resources.

Other proposed areas of collaboration include the development and implementation of Water Safety Plans, borehole development and improved pumping systems. The discussions also covered wastewater management and sanitation, which are essential components of reliable and sustainable water services.URWASCO further identified Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and water infrastructure asset management as areas where technical support could strengthen planning, monitoring and management of its infrastructure.

Research and innovation were also highlighted as important areas for collaboration, alongside broader institutional strengthening initiatives aimed at improving the company’s overall performance.

The engagement underscored the importance of investing in skilled personnel and technical expertise to help water service providers respond effectively to operational challenges and meet the needs of growing communities.

Participants noted that strengthening staff capacity can enhance the ability of water utilities to manage infrastructure, improve treatment processes, monitor water quality and deliver services more efficiently.

The discussions concluded with an agreement to formalise the proposed areas of cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement is expected to provide a framework for implementing the identified interventions and guide future collaboration between the parties.

The proposed partnership will therefore provide a structured platform for sharing technical knowledge, strengthening institutional systems and supporting improvements in water and sanitation service delivery in Uasin Gishu County.
